On Saturday afternoon, 17th August, eight members of Oban Lifeboat’s volunteer crew put to sea, not ‘in a beautiful pea-green boat’ but in a beautiful 16ft raft which they constructed only on Saturday morning to take part in Oban Lions’ annual raft race in Oban Bay.
As the attached picture shows, Mora Edith Macdonald’s little sister was decorated in RNLI colours but, on performance, may not have been up to Mora Edith Macdonald’s speed.
However, the crew did the RNLI proud by coming in second.
They could have been first – had it not been for a navigational error – a dark secret which Campbell Cameron has already disclosed in his account of the raft race here.
Attending the event informally was the RNLI’s’s new Chair, Mr Charles Hunter-Pease, above, who obviously found the event an invigorating affair and, by all accounts, cleverly managed to avoid total immersion.
